Cotton Rock is a fictional memoir set on the White River of the Ozarks. Four narrative voices tell the story John Sinclair, is a professor who comes to live in his Grandfather’s cabin while on Sabbatical. He agrees to teach a writing class at the Cotton Rock library, and there he encounters the other three narrative voices. Anna McKerry, a native of the Ozarks, is an older woman who is caring for her mother (who has Alzheimer), and her daughter, Leah (who has lost her courage), and her granddaughter, Harlo, (an intense little six-year-old who is worried about many things.) Anna attends the writing class to “pull the scabs off old wounds,” and “to find her way out of the swamp.” Emmet McDougal is an avid fisherman who writes a fishing report, and tells us that “fly-fishing is as tricky as straddling a barbed-wire fence while standing on two sore feet.” Finally, Lucy Freeman believes that children have guardian angels. She titles her writing, “Angel Gossip,” because she figures that there “must be quite a passel of angels on the playground over at the Cotton Rock school house. Those angles are bound to swap stories with one another, and I’ve taken to writing them down. I’m no angel, course, but my sister, Opal, teaches at the school, and between her stories and my Sunday School kids, I’ve got more stories than freckles on a turkey egg.” These four voices combine to tell a story filled with love and loss, hope and heartache, glory and shame—a story of romance, mystery, a drowning, a missing body, and a plethora of rich Ozark language and life.

Having just completed reading Janet Post's novel about the folks living in the Ozarks at Cotton Rock, I have the satisfaction of leaving an urban environment and finding solace in a vivid portrayal of life along the White River. My Scots-Irish hill heritage served to make what may have otherwise been unfamiliar colloqualisms and picturesque language welcoming and warm. The characters are multi-dimensional and well developed. By the time the real drama begins to unfold, the reader knows the characters on many levels which propels one toward the satisfying conclusion of the novel. This is an authentic account of a unique cultural time and place. The telling of a story involving the personal life-traumas of several generations, and the insertion of an outsider, is compelling indeed.

Cotton Rock edition by Janet Smith Post Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I purchased the actual book some time ago and now notice it's on too! I wish it had been on before, because I hauled that book around in my bag because I just could not put it down & my would have just been easier because I always have my with me too! (So, that week, I had my and the actual book of Cotton Rock in my bag!)

A lovely piece of literature that should be in every English Literature class in every single college classroom across America!

This book is simply lovely...well written (no grammar misses here), richly drawn characters set against the Ozarks. Sweet and rich - I hope there will be more to come from this author! Janet Smith Post has quite a way with the written word! I believe she has a website where she occasionally puts in a blog from one of the characters from the book - great concept to have ongoing postings from the characters. Here's the link [...]

Buy, read, enjoy immensely!!!
Cotton Rock is a book, not just to be read, but to be truly savored long after the final page is turned. As the last word floated up from the closing paragraph and I suddenly realized I had nothing left to read, a bubble of emotion swelled my heart! This was a story I didn't want to end -and a story that I know continues without me there to bear witness; for surely these superbly rendered characters must live on! They are too finely fashioned to be put away on a bookshelf and forgotten they are little miracles of hope that float on the edge of memory, like twinkling fireflies on the edge of the forest, beckoning you to meander among them, to be part of their story, if for only a moment.
I immediately longed for the characters; for news of Sam, Anna, Leah, John, little Harlo, and yes, even the ignoble "Mr. Sprule". I yearned for more time on that river, more time on the fishing boat, and more time on the back porch of John's grandparent's cabin. I wanted to explore the forest paths and kiss in a `fraidy hole' during a rain storm. There is beauty here; beauty in every word, exquisite storytelling that will turn you inside out and make you long for the sweetness of a pure summer day on a rolling river. If you have ever eaten grilled trout so fresh it was swimming only an hour ago, or enjoyed warm baked bread from the hands of a strong woman that has put every prayer in her heart into the kneading of that bread, or loved as hard as you hated, or hurt until you thought your chest would explode, you will love this story. There is treacherous water here too, dangerous undertows, things that are nudged into the light of day. This is a story that is fully created and loved by its writer, and it shows on every page. Enjoy!
Good story of Ozark language and culture. Needs proofing....a few typos.

Simply wonderful book.

This lyrical novel almost reads like a song. Wonderful imagery. Gripping story. Here is a book I'll read more than once.
