New author P R Adams knocked my socks off with his sci-fi military saga, the Rimes trilogy, and the following story. (If you haven’t read them, you should!) Now he’s turning his excellent writing skills to a different genre, and I have to say, I’m impressed. Most authors I read stick to a particular genre and rarely go outside of that. Adams takes that chance, and delivers. This is a really good urban fantasy novel!In “The Journey Home”, the primary protagonists are Tammy and Elliot, two teenagers who were raised by shamans and mystics after losing their parents. They’re both outsiders who feel uncomfortable in the strange environment of other outsiders—these shamans and mystics come from all over the world, where they’re scorned. Neither Tammy nor Elliot want to buy into what they’ve been taught and are trying to go their own way, but get dragged back into their elders’ world.
The writing is crisp and suspenseful, and the characters are wonderfully believable and engaging. Adams once again does an excellent job with his characterizations, dialog and story. I was very invested in what was happening to Tammy and Elliot as they’re forced to come to terms with the fact that all the hokey mysticism they were taught was in fact real, and their lives are very much at stake if they don’t come to terms with it, and quickly.

This story was interesting to say the least. It kept me entertained and wanting to know what was going to happen next, but wasn't very deep or descriptive.
Right from the start I felt like I didn't really know what was going on. It opens with Elliot, one of the main characters, on the road shortly after leaving home and getting a call that something bad has happened back home. We learn that someone has brutally murdered his family and that the suspect is still on the run.
Elliot doesn't come from a normal family, his home consisted of a group of individuals from all over the world with different beliefs and abilities, including young Tamment.
With their family gone, Elliot and Tammy have to face the evil that took away their loved ones on their own. They are thrust into a world they had been taught about but refused to acknowledge, and now they must face the consequences as they fight for their own lives.
I felt as thought there wasn't quite enough character/story development in the book. I am aware of what djinn are from previous studies, which this story mentions quite a bit, but I feel like an individual who is not aware of what those are or the world they come from May be a little lost.
In this modern-day world, Elliot Saganash and Tammy McPhee find it hard to believe in the mysticism taught by their elders. After the deaths of their parents, Elliot and Tammy each went to live with a grandparent who lived in a mansion with a group of guardians who tried to impart their mystical knowledge on the younger ones. Elliot finds it difficult to believe in something that is not scientific and Tammy finds the elder's beliefs silly. When Elliot leaves for college, Tammy feels abandoned and tries to find solace by going off clubbing with a friend. While gone, their guardians are brutally murdered and Tammy "feels" the presence of the murderer; he is in her mind.
When Elliot goes on a journey to bring the remains of the elders to their native home, he is hunted by an evil spirit who wants to consume him; yet he refuses to concede to the mysticism. At the same time, Tammy is tormented by the spirit who killed the elders. Elliot returns home from his journey, to help Tammy. To survive, they resort to the mysticism taught by their elders. After the ordeal, Elliot looks "up from his musings...Everything looked so real, and so normal. And yet everything felt so wrong."
The pace is moderate and the action is suspenseful. To me, Elliot's journey timeline does to fit Tammy's timeline. I also found the mystical names and concepts confusing, almost of if they were thrown in to impress me and not as part of the story. In spite of this, I enjoyed the read and recommend it for those who enjoy this genre.
The novel starts out pretty fast and mostly maintains that level of intensity. The quieter parts are not so much pacing, although they work as such, as filler to build backstories and set the rules of the setting. It's a mix of Native American, Berber, and Eastern/far Eastern mythology - only European mythology seems totally excluded. That touches on my only real criticism - white people are pretty much limited to caricatures here, ranging from clueless idiots to evil monsters. The novel's take on whites would be very much at home in a Spike Lee movie. That did not stop me from enjoying it, but be warned if you are triggered by that sort of thing.
Overall the novel centers on two young mixed race people, Elliot (who identifies as Native American) and Tammy (who identifies as Berber - not a people I particularly identify as non-white, but racial identity and prejudice are fairly fluid concepts anyway as race is an inherently non-vigorous classification. We are introduced to two supernatural creatures, one of which serves as this novel's main villain. We are also given knowledge about the presence of powers behind the scenes, but anything beyond knowledge of existence is left to future volumes. The lack of knowledge is totally in keeping with a series, and deftly split between enough information to establish motives and enough mystery to fuel future volumes.
Overall I thoroughly enjoy the book. It is action packed, and it's Macguiver qualities limited to reasonable quantities given the plot. I found the characters relatable and reasonably internally consistent. The pacing is good, and the plot is excellently good for this sort of story. Highly recommended.
