Before Hayden’s explosive magic detonates his mother’s home, before his magic is Bound for two years, before he is sent to the orphanage at Merina, or to Mizzenwald to learn magic, his father made a choice.

Aleric Frost was not always known as the Dark Prism. At sixteen, he is heir to one of the most prominent Great Houses in the Nine Lands. An excellent mage, Aleric is handsome, charming, well-liked, and the envy of his peers at Mizzenwald (including his best friend). But beneath the veneer of glamour and good fortune, he battles demons that no one else can see self-doubt, inferiority, the suffocating sense of oppression that comes along with a destiny he can’t control, and a father who is eternally displeased with him.

Until the day he gets a choice to continue along the path that his family has laid out for him, or to break free of the life he’s always lived and carve his own place in history.

He chooses wrong.

**Note This is a prequel to The Broken Prism series. To prevent spoilers, the author recommends reading in the order of publication, beginning with The Broken Prism series and ending with The Dark Prism prequels**

A Father Dream The Dark Prism Book 1 eBook V St Clair

I was nervous about the book originally as prequels can tend to be bad since they have preset ends and thus often have little room for plot twists or suspense. However, the book does a fair job telling Aleric's story well also being interesting and new despite having a known ending. Well the book is interesting and has a few references to the original series it does lack a lot of action, something its predecessors did not. Though this book seems to be a set up for the next which I imagine will have considerably more action. Similar to how the first book in Haydens adventure had less action than others in its series do to having to set up the plot. Despite this and some other minor faults is is still a good read. The books biggest flaw comes in the form of its inconsistencies, failing to match up perfectly with its predecessor. While most of the important points are adressed and taken care of there are a few breaks in consistency, for instance Sark is a master when working with Aleric instead of a mastery level student as stated before. Also- *Spoilers*- the book includes the idea of casting underwater with prisms and mentions how it is a huge problem that isn't solve until later within the novel. This is contrary to the first book in Haydens series where he cast underwater with no problem, and the series never adressed such an issue before so to bring it up as a major point in this book is a huge oversite. And the book goes on to state that the solution will be placed in the mastery level texts not the 2nd year texts, which is all Hayden had access to in the short time before he casts underwater with no problem. Minus these inconsistency and some lack of action the book is a good read and promising. I can't wait to see how the story will end now that the set up has been dealt with and more action can be introduced.

A Father Dream The Dark Prism Book 1 eBook V St Clair Reviews

This is the first of two prequels to the Broken Prism series. It is a marvelous and thought provoking book which changed my whole prospective on the Broken Prism series. Won't give any spoilers but parents, Masters and a best friend all inadvertently lead the "Golden Boy" down the path to his destruction.
My only problem with this story it was not long enough. lol Very good read and gives you a lot more background.
